Pimax Crystal Super – Ultra-High Fidelity PC VR

The Pimax Crystal Super is Pimax’s premium tethered PC VR headset, built around a modular optical engine and top-tier visuals, delivering an expansive field of view and cutting-edge display technology.

Key Highlights & Features

  • Massive pixel count: Around 29 million pixels total, split across both eyes.
  • Wide field of view: Up to 140° horizontal in its ultrawide configuration.
  • Display / optics modularity: The headset supports interchangeable optical engines (e.g. QLED or micro-OLED versions) so users can upgrade or repair more flexibly.
  • Eye tracking & dynamic foveated rendering: Integrated eye tracking (120 Hz) enables Dynamic Foveated Rendering (DFR), which optimizes performance by rendering highest detail where you’re looking.
  • Inside-out (SLAM) tracking: Four onboard cameras scan the room for headset and controller tracking—no external base stations are required by default.
  • Automatic IPD / Optical adjustment: The headset supports automatic IPD adjustment over ~58–72 mm.
  • High refresh modes: Operates at 72 Hz or 90 Hz depending on usage and mode.
  • Optimised for modern PCs: Using techniques like DFR and adjustable render resolutions, Pimax targets broad compatibility with contemporary gaming rigs.
  • Audio & connectivity: Includes spatial audio, dual microphones, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The headset is tethered via DisplayPort (no internal battery or wireless mode).
  • Lighthouse / base station support (optional): For users who prefer base-station tracking, a Lighthouse faceplate is compatible (sold separately).

Technical Variants & Specs

Resolution per eye: 3840 × 3840 for standard QLED engines; micro-OLED versions may adjust vertical pixel count.
Fields of view vs pixel density:
In “50 PPD” mode: ~127° horizontal FOV
In “Ultrawide / 140°” mode (lower PPD)
Refresh rate: 72 Hz and 90 Hz are supported.
IPD range: Automatic 58–72 mm
Display types: Options include QLED + MiniLED local dimming or micro-OLED panels.

Design Philosophy & Trade-offs

The Crystal Super is built to deliver flagship-level VR visuals and flexibility. By making the optical engine swappable, Pimax allows for upgrades, repairs, or alternate display types (QLED vs micro-OLED).

Unlike purely standalone headsets, the Crystal Super does not include back-of-head computing (CPU/GPU, battery) and must be tethered to a PC.

Performance & Compatibility

The headset is compatible with OpenXR / OpenVR / SteamVR platforms and managed through Pimax Play software. Pimax recommends at least an RTX 2080 class GPU for baseline performance, with RTX 3070 or better for ideal experience.
